John Adams wrote to his wife in 1776:
"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
Ooops. Adams was off by 2 days. We celebrate the date written on the Declaration of Independence, not the day of the legal separation.
Adams did get the ways Americans would celebrate the holiday correct. Illuminations, or as we call them, fireworks remain very popular on the 4th. Your doctor wants a holiday tomorrow too, so leave the illuminations to the professionals and watch the fireworks from a safe distance. If you have to light your own fireworks this 4th of July, be careful and follow these steps to stay safe.
Don't use fireworks while drinking alcohol. If your senses are impaired you're more likely to have an accident.
Always closely supervise children and teens using fireworks or holding matches or flames. The most likely people injured on the 4th of July are kids.
Keep a fire extinguisher or bucket of water nearby while lighting fireworks.
Keep a first-aid kit nearby while lighting fireworks.
If someone gets seriously injured, call 9-1-1 immediately. For small burns and wounds, use first-aid on them immediately. Small wounds can easily become infected if not properly cared for.
Handle all fireworks with care and respect. They are NOT toys. Fireworks are made of explosive material and burning metal. They can and do cause serious, life-changing injuries every year. But they don't have to. Stay safe using common sense and these tips and enjoy the holiday.
