Study: Prisoners Misuse Antibiotic Ointments

A recent HealthDay report states: "Researchers interviewed 421 male and 401 female inmates at New York state prisons over two years and found that many overuse and misuse over-the-counter antibiotic ointments. Specifically, the study found that the products were used by: 29 percent of men and 28 percent of women for dry skin; 18 percent of men and 15 percent of women as lip balm; 8 percent of men and 3 percent of women as hair grease; and 6 percent of men for shaving."

Misusing antibiotics can lead to the spread of antibiotic resistant infections like MRSA. These infections spread more rapidly in places like prisons, hospitals, and dorms where people are in close contact for long periods.

At a presentation given to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology in San Antonio, Texas doctoral candidate Carolyn Herzig presented the research along with a strong warning on the need to educate prisoners about the appropriate use of antibiotic ointment. Appropriate medical supplies should be used for appropriate functions, despite cost. Skin healing balm, shaving cream and razors, and shampoo should be used appropriately instead of easy to obtain antibiotic ointments.

Controlling antibiotic resistant infection is important inside facilities and outside as well, as these infections become more widespread. Antibiotic ointment is an extremely important medical supply for wound care, but it must be used properly. Always follow correct use procedures with your medical supplies. Good question. It seems to me that many prisoners and probably some prison officials consider the A/B ointment an easy "multi-use" product. Both prison administrators and prisoners need to be educated that these ointments are only for wound care.

How are these inmates obtaining so mu A/B oint? Do they have access to lotions or hair grease, etc... so they would not feel the need to use A/B oint in it's place?
