Top 5 Pet Health Myths

We love our pets, but sometimes we let myth, hearsay, and rumors guide us, instead of scientific fact. Here are the top 5 myths about our beloved animals and the facts behind the fiction. Click ahead to read them all.

5. Dogs See in Black and White. Dogs don't see the same way humans do, but researchers think it's more like a blue, violet, gray world, rather than strictly black and white.

4. Cats Like Milk. Some cats may think it's tasty, but they probably don't like the feeling it gives them afterward. Adult cats usually don't have much lactase, making them mostly lactose intolerant, and making milk, possibly tasty, but possibly troubling to the kitty's stomach.

3. Tail Wagging Means a Happy Dog. Not necessarily, say dog experts. Tail wagging can mean a happy dog, but it can mean a scared dog, as well. A low wag can mean a frightened or even aggressive dog.

2. A Wet Nose Means a Healthy Dog. A dog with a wet nose is usually healthy, but this is not a real indicator of a dog's health. The only real way to check a dog's health is to see if he's running a fever.

1. Cats Always Land on their Feet. Cats do have an instinct to land on their feet. They have been reported to have survived falls from buildings over 40 stories tall. They have incredible dexterity and balance. But cats who survive falls get more attention than the ones who don't. And unfortunately, many cats become severely injured, even on shallow falls.
