Blood typing is determined by the type of antigens or markers that are on the surface of red blood cells (either "A" or "B") and if there are antibodies to a portion of the blood type known as the Rh factor (either "positive" or "negative"). Blood type is inherited from and dependent upon, the blood type of an individual's parents. In the case of a transfusion, a person's blood type needs to be compatible with the donor's blood type or an allergic-type reaction can occur resulting from the immune system of the recipient attacking the incompatible donor blood cells as invading organisms.

Also, it is also very important to know the Rh factor status when a woman is pregnant. If a pregnant woman is Rh negative and her baby is Rh positive, the mother's immune system can sometimes attack the baby's blood cells because of the differing blood types. All pregnant women should routinely have a blood typing test done to see if they are at risk. This blood typing should generally be done as part of routine prenatal care. A subcutaneous injection of Rh D Immune Globulin can be given during pregnancy to prevent this immune cross-reaction, which may be harmful to the developing fetus.

It is recommended that all pregnant woman and those who need a blood transfusion determine their blood type, especially the Rh factor. All donated blood has a blood type test performed on it so that donor and recipient blood types match. Paternity testing often involves blood typing, which may or may not be able to prove if someone could be the parent of a child using the basic dominant/recessive gene matrix calculation. Interpretation of Results

The appropriate identification boxes have been filled in with the name, address, date and contact information of the individual tested. The card can then be sealed with the clear plastic laminate cover sheet provided to create a permanent blood typing rec

Wash your hands before carrying out the test and again after carrying out the test.

With the test card still on a flat surface release one drop of water onto each of the coloured reagents spots on the EldonCard.

Massage the finger from the bottom to the top to encourage bloodflow. Press the blood towards fingertip. Repeat pressing until a drop with a 3 to 4 mm (1/8 inch) diameter is seen.

Transfer the blood to an EldonStick, approached from beneath the finger. Don't smear the blood over the skin.

Do not overfill.

Place the eldonstick with the drop of blood into the first circle. The blood should touch the water already present. Gently press the side of the eldonstick head against the card and stir in the water and blood mixture until the coloured dry material has

Repeat this procedure for the other 3 circles, making sure you use a new eldonstick for each circle. You should NEVER transfer liquid from one circle to another.

Once all 4 circles are complete gently tilt the whole card vertically on its bottom edge and keep this position for 10 seconds. You will see the blood flowing slowly to the bottom of the circle. Repeat this procedure tilting the card on the 3 other sides.
