Exercise and Aging, Part 2

What are the general signs of aging?
When do we reach the age where functions start to decline? Some things, such as reaction time, will start to deteriorate in our 20s. A decline in muscle strength and increase in body fat can start in the 30s.

Women in their 40s can see signs of peri-menopause or even full-blown menopause. Hearing and eyesight can start to decline by the 50s. The signs of aging are diverse and vary from person to person. Normal aging can include one or many of the symptoms listed below; however, having one of these symptoms is not necessarily a sign of aging and any of these symptoms can also indicate a health issue not related to aging.

  • Overall decrease in energy and vigor
  • Tendency to become easily tired
  • Changes in sleeping patterns
  • Decreased memory
  • Behavioral changes
  • Skin and hair changes
  • Change in hair color
  • A loss or decrease in vision and hearing
  • Changes in bowel function
  • Decrease in libido and/or sexual dysfunction
  • Urinary problems
  • Changes in menstrual cycle
  • Abdominal obesity and inability to lose weight

The signs of aging can be hard to discern by yourself. Consult your doctor if you exhibit any of these symptoms or have questions about them.
