Mindful Exercise, Part 3

Learn a new language. Yes, it is optimal to learn a new language when you are young and your mind is more pliable. But it is not impossible to learn a new language as an adult. In fact, it could be good for your mental health.

Exercise your BrainStretching your mind beyond what you perceive are your limitations could expand not only your cultural horizons but your mental ones as well.

Watch less television and read more. We emphasize the importance of reading to children, yet very rarely do we see anything imploring older adults to read. Television puts the brain into neutral and can have a numbing effect on the mind. Reading engages the mind and can help stimulate the brain.

We are bombarded by information on looking good and staying healthy. Eat right and exercise regularly. Almost everyone has heard this. Not everyone knows that exercise for your mind can be another important step in aging well.

Spend just 15 minutes a day doing something that stimulates your mind – work a crossword puzzle or read a book about something new. Memorize a poem or take a new route to work. Who knows? You may save yourself from losing your keys or forgetting people’s names as you get older. You could also end up trying some new things that not only enrich your mind, but your life.
