Proprioception and Kinesthetic Awareness, Part 3

Who can benefit?
People of all age and skill levels can benefit from working on proprioception and kinesthetic awareness.

Proprioception and Kinesthetic AwarenessChildren often experience growth spurts that make them appear clumsy or uncoordinated. Older adults frequently lose coordination and sense of balance. Certain illnesses and medications can have an effect on proprioception. Recreational and professional athletes often want to improve reflexes and movement.

Proprioception and kinesthetic awareness can be improved with exercises.

If you feel like you´ve been a hopeless klutz all your life, be encouraged! There are things you can do to become better coordinated and more aware of how your body moves.

Exercises
So now that you know what proprioception and kinesthetic awareness are, what can you do to improve them? Good exercises for proprioception would be activities that challenge balance and equilibrium. Exercises for kinesthetic awareness would include coordination and movement patterns.

Exercises to improve proprioception and kinesthetic awareness range from simple to complicated in execution. What they are often depends on your needs and how in tune you are with these senses. Are you preparing for a sport? Are you trying to regain coordination and balance after an injury? Are you working on improvements in acts of daily living?
