Hilarie Cash, PhD is a well recognized pioneer in the emerging field of internet addiction. In 1999, she co-founded Internet/Computer Addiction Services, an outpatient clinic in Redmond, WA. In 2008, she co-authored Video Games and Your Kids: How Parents Stay in Control and in 2009 she co-founded reSTART: Internet Addiction Recovery Program, the only therapeutic retreat center of its kind in North America.
In her first talk, Dr. Cash will discuss the signs and symptoms of Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), a new disorder under consideration for inclusion in the DSM-V. The subcategories will be identified and discussed (i.e. video game addiction, sex/"love" addiction, gambling, shopping, etc.) She will use case histories to illustrate the problems of proper diagnosis, as there often exist co-morbid conditions which may either be the cause or the result of the IAD. She will then discuss effective treatment approaches and expected course of treatment.
In her second talk, Dr. Cash will discuss the impact on child development of excessive video game play and time spent with other digital distractions. These activities can have lasting and profound impact on physical development (poor muscular/skeletal development, eye strain, chronic sleep deprivation, etc), social development, academic skills, and emotion regulation. Problems in the family system, such as poor modeling, poor ability to set and maintain boundaries, and codependency will be discussed.

Surface Disinfecting: Contaminated environmental surfaces add to the spread of disease. If a surface is not disinfected between patient care, it becomes the vehicle to transmit organisms from one patient to another or to a healthcare workers hands and so on. Surface disinfectants are not all the same. A description of active ingredients, contact times, EPA terminology and levels of disinfection will be discussed. Specific pathogens of concern will also be addressed.
